There is a great focus on Mining, but not much information on how to use DC for Anonymous Browsing and Data Security. For example, I seem to get connected to the internet through my own IP - not an 'edge' - when Smart Mode is selected. I think the intercommunication between Deeper Connect units is encrypted, but I don't seem to get any Anonymity value if I am 'Smart Connecting' with my own IP.

Can anyone explain how best to use DC for Anonymity through selection of Tunnels and 'Smart'versus 'Full' Route?

9 days later

I'm a little surprised noone has weighed-in with information or even an opinion ...

Thanks a lot for this great question, because I have the same "problem".

"Smart route" uses my ISP IP, and this is what I definitely not want it to use. So I'm stuck with full route. Not satisfying...

eazee, beachside - thanks for confirming it's not just me. This unit was sold with a description that clearly included anonymity, but it seems that this is being provided only 'incidentally' and quite weakly. Using Smart Mode does leave your traffic exposed to yout ISP. Not having a tunnel in your region, and using Full Route to another region does result in your IP being somewhere else, but often at a severe and unpredictable speed performance hit. The latter I can understand, as DC units will be clicking into and out of the network the whole time and will have other loads on their bandwidth. What seems unacceptable to me is that I cannot get IP obfuscation in my own region. Whilst some aspects of the ad blocking and filtering appear to work, I will be continuing to use my NordVPN subscription. It is possible to use DC and NodVPN together, but it seems pointless to do so: In Smart Mode all the traffic appears to go straight to the NordVPN servers bypassing the DC network entirely; in Full Route it works too, but with the speed performance hits associated with the DC node node behaviour in the tunneled Regions.

i got dp mini which was bought from indiegogo.com and its not hidding my ip at all and it does not have dpr in menu which means i can't mine. I email to tech.support@deeper.network and support@deeper.network so far no response from them. it sucks this device is so far useless.

sidiqui - I share the same situation with you. I feel I was mis-sold the Deeper Network device, which I purchased for anonymity and personal security. I cannot see that it can perform as well as a reputable VPN service or going through the TOR network. I do not have an interest in Mining, but it seems very odd to be 'locked out' of the capability because of the Indiegogo purchase route.

For info, I have had this email conversation with Hector. Lookng forward to the promised response from 'tech support':

Hi Eloise,

Thanks for the email, our tech support will take a look at it and prepare some answers.

Kind regards,

H.

Would an Admin please chip in to this thread?

Thanks

Hi Hector, I think several Deeper Connect purchasers - and probably many potential purchasers - are awaiting the contribution from Tech Support that you promised.

I think the silence here speaks volumes. The inability of Deeper Network to answer what are simple questions on anonymity and security implies they have no answer to give.

In summary then, using a Deeper Network device in Smart Mode provides zero anonymity as it puts your traffic straight to your ISP with no encryption. Worse, your Deeper Connect - unless you disable sharing - will act as an exit node, with someone else's IP traffic associated with your IP address and unencrypted.

Such information as there is in Deeper Connect documentation - https://deeper-network-inc.gitbook.io/deeper-connect-knowledge-base/faq/security/security-concerns - appears to confirm there is no obfuscation or anonymity:

"If someone else used my IP address and did something illegal, could my ISP trace this activity and blame me? If such cases do occur ... ... Deeper devices can help rid you of liability. The port used for sharing connections and the port used for your personal connection are separate and can be distinguished. The devices keep internal logs to show that you were not the one accessing the content and in an upcoming update these logs will be easier to access and searchable."

So - the Deeper Connect devices are (but not yet in an accessible manner) keeping logs of your and separately others traffic distinguishable by Port Number. I think your ISP and regional law enforcement is going to give less than a tinker's cuss if it finds that your IP has been found accessing illegal content. Your use of the Deeper Network device facilitated such access even if it was not you. I cannot recommend anyone use these Deeper Network devices.

@Hector, @admin, @Support - corrections or comments?

OK - so that's 11 days with no answer from Deeper Tech Support.

I find that disrepectful at least, extremely concerning at worst.

You expose yourself to crimnal liability if you continue to use them. You are not achieving anonymity either.

These devices were mis-sold and original backers like myself have been let down.

Agreed. It has been discussed in the BitTorrent thread. E.g. in Germany, using the device as intended is a high risk. Even with the logs, you will get into legal trouble.

There has been - NO - response to any Deeper Connect purchaser making a similar query to my own about the privacy and anonymity of Deeper Connect devices.

It is entirely unreasonable for these devices to be marketed as suitable for personal online security, when evidentially thay are actually a distributed crypto-currency mining network.

For there to have been - NO - response in that time, nor (and I have checked) any changes to the online documentation in that time definitely indicates there is something negligent, 'fishy', or both about Deeper Connect.

Available evidence suggests as a Backer, I have 'been had'.

The very passive approach in handling this forum and community issues is interesting and may as well be alarming.
Am I missing any other communications channel that is dealing with Deeper issues?

Hello everyone, to start I apologize for the delayed response to this thread. Our team has been very busy lately with the volume of questions across several avenues of communication. The tech.support@deeper.network email is checked often by several team members but once and awhile an email can slip through. Additionally, we have active communities on telegram and discord (where you can also reach team members directly) that we also monitor and offer support along with an ever expanding moderator team. That being said the communication on this forum from us is not where we want it to be and we will do out best to improve this.

Now to address the questions and concerns that are stated here. By design Smart Route mode does not pass all your traffic through another node to provide 100% IP obfuscation, that is the purpose of full route mode which does hide your IP. However, Smart Route can be configured to hide your IP on a per domain basis using the Domain Configuration page on AtomOS, I will link an article at the end giving more information about this configuration. The intention is to provide the ability to route to multiple locations at the same time based on the content you want to access with Smart Route as well as keep speeds high for content that does not need to be passed through another country.

With full route, speed is dependent on the upload speed and number of nodes available where you want to connect, as the network expands this can improve with more and more users sharing bandwidth. The DPN features are under active development and will be improved alongside other features of the device, this is an integral component to the device and is not being forgotten.

This brings me to comments about the focus on mining, which is correct that there is a lot of talk about mining lately but what may not seem obvious is this has a direct benefit to the DPN features of the device. Mining is not there without a purpose, we are working on it and promoting it to grow the network. Mining incentivizes sharing bandwidth and brings in users with fast gigabit internet connections. As these users join, keeping their devices running 24/7 for better rewards, more and more nodes will be available to connect with. Additionally, all users can sign up for and start mining with out basic mining registration and staking, I will link info to this at the end of the post.

Finally, concerns about liability with sharing. In one of the most recent updates we released a big improvement to the torrent blocking feature to ease worries about torrents getting through the devices. Additionally, blacklisting is receiving attention to improve its ability and ease of use when it comes to stopping other types of content from passing through your device. Sharing logs have been implemented for awhile now and have been confirmed by users to capture any traffic going through their device from other users. If you receive server traffic and it does not show up in the logs then that means it was not another user using your device to access content but other traffic such as blockchain updates and tunnel establishment. Hopefully, I have addressed most of the comments here but feel free to follow up with more questions and I will do my best to answer.

Corey, I have to remind you that the Deeper Connect devices were sold as being an in-line plug-in security device that anyone could use to immidiately increase their internet security. Your advertisments included a video showing exactly this, giving a 'thumbs up' at the end of the sequence. However, connecting a Deeper Connect device - without attention to some quite detailed configuration away from the Smart mode default - does leave the user to the hazards I have described and which you do not refute.

In addition, I backed this device as a VPN substitute - which it was clearly positioned by your initial description to backers. The cryptocurrency mining was definitely not the described focus and your subsequent argument for it going hand-in-hand with the aggregation of a fast network benefitting non-mining users seems very much after-the-fact.

I find it quite distessing how tone-deaf your answer is in this thread, where you have answered the question you wish were asked with the answers you were prepared to give. I am astonished you found the temerity within yourself to post three links to mining topics that were irrelevant in this discussion.

Please look at the title of this thread, which is - for your convenience - 'Advice on Settings for Browsing Anonyimity and Security' and provide answers that starts like these:

"For Deeper Connect device users wishing to obtain the best possible Browsing Anonymity and Security through use of their devices, the following configuration is recommended ..."

"Users should note that this configuration affects connection performance in the following ways: ...

"Configuration in the specified manner provides these protections: ...

"Configuration in the specified manner does not provide protection from: ...

What I am asking for should not be hard. Until then, I stand by my earlier unrefuted assertion that no-one should use a Deeper Connect device on their network, at all.

well I'm also curious about browse anonymous. I understand how the deeper works with the smart route and domain configuration. But then again it doesn't work all the time. For instance I live in Europe and want to go to the site cwseed.com in the US. It doesn't work and there are nodes online in the US.

so the smart route isn't working that well. Also tried Netflix😛 yet again doesnt work. I also didn't buy this product for the mining option. Then again its a nice feature but it seems people are forgetting what this device is about. And that is security and bypassing censorships and ensuring privacy. that a phrase I copied from the deeper website.

Well l hope that de deeper will work when de mining option is available and more users will provide bandwidth. Yet again if the smart route doesnt work right now then it will not in the future igf nothing is done. also I agree with Eloise for not answering his/her questions. Just tell people how this device works and what doesnt work then you will get less questions from people😉

by the way I am satisfied with the product because I believe you all work hard and in the future this device will work great I believe. For what I'm using it it is great. I do not need to hide my IP address all the time so this is not a issue for me. The smart route isn't working well or even not working at all. So just work hard on the issues at hand and reply to people's questions honestly. When people ask you how it works tell them.

By the way this question from Eloise is asked more often just search the forum/reply's on indiegogo if there still available the anwser is already given. But then again the workers can just reply to your answer honestly. Then you will see that this device will work great in the future hopefully. It isnt a VPN that will hide your IP all the time. If you want that go to full route (that isnt working great because of low bandwith) or buy an other VPN service.

I must not have been very clear in my previous answer here. To summarize and keep everything brief here is a comparison of the different modes and what situation they each leave you in currently. As I mentioned before this is the current state of the DPN features which are subject to improvement from updates as well as network growth.

    Full Route:
All traffic goes through a specified country that has been added to your tunnel list, hiding your IP and acting similar to traditional VPN services. Speed will be slower as in other modes due to the upload speeds of connected nodes.

    Smart Route:
Traffic will be routed as in full route mode for the domains specified while other traffic will be passed locally, hiding your IP for the specified domains. Speed will be faster as some traffic will use your local connection and some will pass through nodes.

    DPN Disabled:
All traffic will be passed locally, retaining your IP address.

No matter the configuration above, the device provides all of the same firewall and network security functionality. What changes is how your traffic is routed. I also addressed sharing and liability in my previous post so hopefully with these two posts I have clarified things a little.

I only commented on mining here as it was mentioned several times and I wanted to show why it is necessary for the DPN features. The reason it was not touted as a main feature during the Indiegogo campaign is due to the different types of users of these devices. Some may just want the device for the DPN features and others may not want that and just want to mine. Both are important and compliment each other with miners providing active nodes for DPN users to connect to. I will provide another link here which should clarify how the network functions and why all these features work the way they do.

If the information stated in https://deeper-network.medium.com/a-101-on-dpns-bd5e2b7c9e25 was included front & center in the DPN marketing material, I would have skipped purchasing two pico's and one mini. Choosing which domain to force through a tunnel is not a good solution--I've tried it and it works sporadically. And the full tunneling is a complete joke--I got dial-up modem speeds. Too bad I wasted so much money on these devices. Live and learn...

Using Smart Route and configuring specific domains through designated tunnels. That function stopped working a few versions ago. I don’t think anything in Smart Route is set aside for designated tunnels. … Except for manipulated geolocation and transparent personal IP address (i.e., your personal IP address showing up ihakfway across the world, but your ISP s still identifiable).

      Try it:

      1. Use Smart Route mode
      2. Choose an IP geolocation website
      3. Designate that website’s domain to a tunnel in a country 12 hours ahead of you.
      4. Go to your chosen geolocation website. You’ll find your AT&T home IP address and its public info but on a location pinned in North Korea.
